This is an event that is eagerly anticipated by the students, corporate sponsors and the community who turn out in great numbers to get in on the fun.

Design it, build it and float it! With prior knowledge of the building materials (one 9/9 sheet of cardboard, duct tape, contact cement, some string and a paper clip) students design and construct a model of their boat prior to the race. In a two hour construction time frame the sea faring creations must be ready for their maiden voyages. In addition to design and construction criteria used to judge the competition, the cardboard vessels must be able to cross the pool at lightning speed and be able to endure the weight of its occupants for 2 minutes or more.

Through the design, construction and racing components in this event, creative and spirited teamwork is essential. Investigation and comprehension of key design elements such as principles of structure strength and rigidity, water permeability, propulsion, friction and directional control, buoyancy and displacement are essential for a boat that wants to float. Finally, the competitive rush of winning, propel the winners to meet the many challenges and take home the trophy at the end of the day.
