OUR BIGGEST EVENT OF THE YEAR

MAY 3RD, 2019 // YELLOWKNIFE MULTIPLEX

Over 60 competitors travelled from across the Northwest Territories to the Yellowknife Multiplex Arena to compete for gold at the 21st Annual Skills Canada NWT Territorial Competition on Friday, May 3rd.

Over 20 competition categories were on display at this year’s massive event, such as Video Production, Welding, Public Speaking, and Graphic Design Technology. High school and post-secondary students, as well as apprentices faced off in an olympic-style skills competition, with Gold, Silver and Bronze medals being awarded to the top placing competitors at the Closing Ceremony on the evening of May 3rd.

The Territorial Competition saw over 750 visitors to the event, including students from local schools, industry leaders and family members. Attendees were also welcome to participate in the Try-A-Trade® & Career Expo, held in conjunction with the Territorial Competition. Organizations, businesses and educational institutions hosted some exciting exhibitor booths and offered fun hands-on activities. This portion of the event was intended to allow attendees to learn about a variety of trade and technology disciplines, all while learning the valuable skills that are involved in each of them.

OVER 20 COMPETITION CATEGORIES

There are plenty of exciting competition categories available for secondary, post secondary students as well as apprentices to take part in – including Graphic Design Technology, Carpentry, Hairstyling and Public Speaking. Top placing competitors have an opportunity to represent Team Northwest Territories at the Skills Canada National Competition!

BRAND NEW NON-COMPETITIVE STREAM

The competitive scene isn’t for you? The brand new non-competitive participation stream will allow secondary students to participate in the event and complete a skill project, without the added pressure of competing. This is ideal for passionate students who may not be ready to compete just yet.

TRY-A-TRADE® & TECHNOLOGY EVENT

The Career Expo, held in conjunction with the territorial competition, showcases businesses and organizations that employ trades and technology professionals. We incorporate dozens of Try-A-Trade® demonstrations and exhibits from local businesses and institutions that allow visitors to try their hand at
various skills.
